EPA 608 Type 1 Practice Test (Small Appliances)

Type I certification covers small appliances, like refrigerators, window units, dehumidifiers and vending machines (40 CFR 82.161(a)(1)(i); 82.152).

The test is 25 Core questions plus 25 Type I questions. The rule tested most is recovery: with recovery equipment made on or after November 15, 1993, you recover 90% of the charge if the compressor runs and 80% if it doesn't, or pull the unit down to 4 inches of mercury vacuum (40 CFR 82.156(b)). What does EPA Type 1 certification cover?

A small appliance is one that is fully made, charged and hermetically sealed in a factory with 5 lb or less of refrigerant: refrigerators and freezers, room and window A/C units, packaged terminal heat pumps, dehumidifiers, under-counter ice makers, vending machines and water coolers (82.152). Type I lets you maintain, service or repair them (82.161(a)(1)(i)).

Is the Type 1 test open book?

It can be. A program that offers Type I alone may give it by mail, and the mail-in pass mark is 84% instead of 70%. A mail-in Type I can't be used toward Universal, and a Type I taken as part of Universal is closed-book (Appendix D (a), (b), (e)).
