HVAC Certification: What's Required and What's Optional

Most "HVAC certifications" are optional. One is required by federal law for anyone who opens a refrigerant circuit: EPA Section 608 (40 CFR 82.161).

Schools, NATE and some states offer other credentials to show skill. If you're starting out, 608 is the one to get first. This page sorts the required from the optional and shows the fastest path to the 608 card.
