How to Get EPA 608 Certified Online
You can take the EPA 608 test online, but for Type II, Type III and Universal it has to be closed-book and proctored "in a secure environment" by an EPA-approved program (Appendix D (a)).
Online, that means a proctor watching remotely, if the program offers it. Type I alone is the exception: programs may offer a mail-in format, but it needs 84% instead of 70%, and it can't count toward Universal (Appendix D (a), (e); EPA). We're not a testing program. We're the practice step before it.

Can you take the EPA 608 test online?
Yes, through an approved program that proctors remotely. The rules still apply: closed book, a photo ID check, and a proctor who can't know the questions in advance (Appendix D (a), (b)).
How much does EPA 608 certification cost online?
EPA doesn't set a price. Programs may charge "reasonable fees" (Appendix D (a)). Compare the published price, and the retake fee, on each program's own page before you book.
Approved programs that test online: prices as of October 25, 2026
Each program below is on EPA's list of approved programs (page last updated October 20, 2026), where EPA marks it as offering remote or online testing. Prices and inclusions are copied from each program's own page on October 25, 2026. They change, so check the page before you pay. This is a sample, not the full list, and not a ranking. We have no deal with any of these programs.
| Program | Price on its page | What the page says is included |
|---|---|---|
| CHEERS | $150 for Type I, II or III; $175 for Universal; $85 test only | Core and type course work, study guide, unlimited practice tests, three attempts at an online-proctored exam, certification card |
| Faraday EPA Certification | $199 | Video lessons, practice exams, the exam online in a weekly session with a proctor, up to 10 attempts, a printable card |
| The Training Center | $300 | Course, exam with live online proctoring, unlimited attempts until you pass, practice tests and study guides |
| SkillCat | Advertised as $10; its comparison table says free for 3 days, then $10 a month | Training, study guides and an exam watched by a virtual proctor through your webcam. The page gives two answers on retakes (4 attempts at no extra cost, and pay for each attempt), so ask first. |
| Mainstream Engineering (EPATest.com) | Not shown on the page; you see it after you log in | Universal test online through ProctorU, booked at least 72 hours ahead. Retakes cover only the sections you didn't pass. |
Also marked by EPA as offering remote or online testing: AC/C Tech, ESCO Institute, IDI, Interplay Learning, Licensed Trades of America, National Certification Institute, Solar One, Trade Masters Online, Two Brothers Air & Heat and Video General. We didn't find a clear published price for these on October 25, 2026.
Is there a free EPA 608 certification?
Free practice, yes. A free proctored certification is uncommon, though some employers, schools and supply houses cover the fee. Ask before you pay. Our free 10-question test is above.
EPA 608 classes and courses: do you need one?
No. EPA requires a passing test, not a course (82.161(a)). A class makes sense if you're new to the trade. If you already work with refrigerant, self-study plus practice tests is usually enough.
How to pick an EPA-approved testing program
- Check that it's on EPA's list of approved programs.
- Check its proctoring requirements: webcam, room, ID.
- Check when the card arrives. It must be within 30 days of the test (Appendix D (f)).
- Check the retake policy and fee.
