The EPA 608 Exam, Explained

The EPA 608 exam is built from a question bank EPA writes and shares only with approved testing programs (40 CFR 82.161(c)).

Each test has 25 Core questions plus 25 for each equipment type you're taking, and the passing score is 70% (Appendix D). Type II, Type III and Universal are closed-book and proctored. Here's the whole format on one page, so nothing about test day surprises you.

How many questions are on the EPA 608 exam?

Type II50 (25 Core + 25 Type II)Closed-book, proctored
Type III50 (25 Core + 25 Type III)Closed-book, proctored
Type I50 (25 Core + 25 Type I)On-site, or mail-in if the program offers Type I only

What is the passing score?

70% on the closed-book test. A mail-in Type I test needs 84% (Appendix D (e)). On a 25-question section, 70% is 17.5, so you need 18.

Is the EPA 608 open book?

Type II, Type III and Universal: no. They must be closed-book and proctored in a secure setting, and proctors make sure no notes or training materials are used (Appendix D (a), (b)). Type I: a program that offers Type I alone may give it by mail, with an 84% pass mark, and a mail-in Type I can't be used toward Universal (Appendix D (a), (e)). EPA also says an open-book Core can't be used for Universal (EPA).

Is the EPA 608 test hard?

Our view: Core is the section to take most seriously, because it's dates, rules and definitions rather than field skill. Techs with years on the job still get caught by it. Start with the free Core practice test. We don't quote pass rates: programs report them to EPA (Appendix D (g)), but EPA doesn't publish them.

Is there a time limit?

Appendix D sets none, so each program sets its own. Our app uses 30 minutes per 25 questions as a practice pace.

What to bring on test day

Photo ID. Proctors must check it, and a driver's license, government ID card, passport or military ID all work (Appendix D (b)). For a remote test, check your program's webcam and room rules ahead of time.

Where can I take the EPA 608 test?

Only with an approved program (EPA's list). Options and cost: EPA 608 certification online.

When do I get my results and card?

Within 30 days of the test: programs must send results and the wallet card by then (Appendix D (e), (f)).

Can I retake it?

The rule doesn't limit retakes. Each program sets its own retake fee and waiting period.
