The EPA 608 exam has four parts: Core, Type I, Type II and Type III. Every test includes 25 Core questions plus 25 questions for each type you're certifying in, and you need 70% to pass (40 CFR 82 Subpart F, Appendix D). This free practice test draws from all four parts so you can see where you stand in about five minutes. Each answer shows a short explanation and the regulation it comes from, so you learn the rule and not just the letter.
Our questions are original. EPA gives its real question bank only to approved testing programs (40 CFR 82.161(c)), so any site claiming to show "the actual test answers" is guessing or breaking those rules.
Most techs need Universal or Type II
Type II covers medium-, high- and very high-pressure equipment (82.161(a)(1)(ii)). Systems that run on R-22 or R-410A are high-pressure appliances under EPA's definitions (40 CFR 82.152), so that's the type for most A/C and refrigeration service. Universal adds Type I and Type III and lets you work on all of it (82.161(a)(1)(iv)). Both are closed-book tests with a proctor, given in a secure setting (Appendix D (a)), so practice under the same conditions: no notes.
Type I is the one exception. A program that offers Type I alone may give it by mail, and the mail-in pass mark is 84% instead of 70%. A mail-in Type I can't be used toward Universal (40 CFR 82 Subpart F, Appendix D (a) and (e)).
How many questions are on the EPA 608 test?
Each section has 25 questions. A Type I, II or III test is 50 questions (25 Core plus 25 for that type), and Universal is 100 (Appendix D (a), (d)). More on the format: the EPA 608 exam, explained.

Where can I find EPA 608 practice questions with answers?
Right here, with an explanation and the cited rule for each one. Be careful with answer-key PDFs you find online. The real test draws from a bank EPA keeps private (82.161(c)), and certifying programs must build multiple versions of each test from it (Appendix D (a)). A list of "the answers" can't match the test you'll sit.
How close is this to the real EPA 608 exam?
The structure is the same: 25 questions per section, 70% to pass, closed book for Type II, III and Universal (Appendix D). Topics follow EPA's published outline (EPA test topics). The wording is different from the real bank, by design.
What score do I need to pass?
70% on the closed-book test, which is 18 of 25 in a section. A mail-in Type I test needs 84% (Appendix D (e)).
