Universal EPA Certification (EPA 608 Universal)
Universal certification means you've passed Core plus all three equipment types, so you can legally work on small appliances, high-pressure systems and low-pressure chillers (40 CFR 82.161(a)(1)(iv)).
The Universal test is 100 questions, 25 from each section, and you can take it in one sitting or build it up by passing Type I, II and III separately (Appendix D (a)). It has to be closed-book and proctored. A Type I passed by mail won't count toward it, and neither will an open-book Core (Appendix D (a); EPA).

Is universal certification worth it over Type II only?
Our opinion: yes, for most techs. You're already studying Core and Type II, and Universal adds two more 25-question sections. It means you never have to turn down a job because of the equipment type.

How many questions are on the universal EPA test?
100 (Appendix D (a)), and the passing score is 70% (Appendix D (e)). Many programs grade each 25-question section on its own, so you need 18 of 25 in each. That's common practice rather than something the rule spells out, so confirm with your program.
Can I get universal EPA certification online?
Yes, with an approved program that proctors online. The mail-in route doesn't apply to Universal. See EPA 608 certification online.
Is there a free universal EPA certification?

How long does it take to get universal certified?
